Visiting Safe Harbor in Richmond, VA
Richmond is a very pretty city full of history. The James River is spectacular and the view of the rapids from downtown will blow your mind! I made the trip to Richmond to visit our partner shelter Safe Harbor. Safe Harbor empowers survivors of sexual and domestic violence to transform their lives, and promotes healthy relationships for all.
Vanessa and I were interviewed by the lovely, caring and talented Amie McLain. You can watch our interview with Amie by clicking here. After the interview Vanessa brought me to Safe Harbor so the shelter's director, Cheryl Hunt could give me a tour and put me to work. Like all of the shelter's I've visited, Safe Harbor feels like a home and that is very important since they house both women and children affected by domestic violence. Cheryl is an amazing woman who runs a wonderful program in Richmond. Unfortunately my driving skills, or lack there of, cut my visit short and I wasn't able to do any volunteer work. On my way to Safe Harbor I took a wrong turn and went down a very steep driveway, ripping out the under carriage of my rental car.
I met with Jodi Leonard, Director of Development and Community Relations and Vanessa Durrant, Director of Counseling and Advocacy for Safe Harbor. Vanessa joined me for interviews on both NBC and ABC News in Richmond to talk about our partnership and raise awareness for the amazing things these ladies do for their community.
Cheryl was a big help, looking up and printing out the location and contact information for the nearest car rental location. I was able to get my car swapped out for a new one and left for Atlanta right on time. Thanks Jodi, Vanessa and Cheryl! Next time I'm in town I will volunteer for two days to make up for this one! As luck would have it, Vanessa and I also got the opportunity to be interviewed on NBC 12 in Richmond as well. You can watch our interview with the wonderful Heather Sullivan by clicking here.
